Description: Four panel floor screen, Japan, 19th century (Edo or Meiji), exquisitely painted on gold-leaf background with flying phoenix-pheasants (ho-ou), auspicious symbols of peace and prosperity and sometimes associated with the Empress (the vermillion bird (suzaku) is symbol of the South, one of the four cardinal points), along with floral sprays, including morning glory, orchids and chrysanthemum.
