Artist Biography: Faith Ringgold
(American, 1930–2024) was a celebrated artist, author, and educator whose work significantly shaped late 20th-century American art. Born in Harlem, New York, she studied at City College of New York and began her career as a painter during the Civil Rights era. Her early American People series explored themes of race, identity, and social change in the United States.
In the 1980s, Ringgold developed her acclaimed narrative “story quilts,” which combine painting, fabric, and written text. Drawing inspiration from African American quilting traditions, she used this format to tell stories of family, community, history, and aspiration. Her best-known work, Tar Beach, later became a widely read children’s book.
Ringgold’s art is held in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, affirming her enduring cultural and artistic legacy
