Artist Biography: Jessica Hayllar

(British, 1858–1940) was one of the most accomplished female painters of the late Victorian era, celebrated for her luminous domestic interiors and sensitive depictions of women’s lives. Born in London to the artist James Hayllar, she trained at the family residence, Castle Priory in Wallingford, alongside her sisters. Despite the restrictions placed on women in the 19th century, she exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy between 1879 and 1915, as well as with the Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

Working within the ideals of Victorian domesticity, Hayllar portrayed mothers, daughters, and servants engaged in quiet moments of preparation and reflection. Her carefully structured compositions elevate everyday interiors into spaces of dignity, emotional nuance, and subtle commentary on women’s evolving roles in society.
