Artist Biography:Niki de Saint Phalle

(French/American, 1930–2002) was a bold and visionary artist known for her exuberant sculptures and radical performances. Born in France and raised partly in the United States, she emerged in the 1960s as a key figure associated with Nouveau Réalisme. Her early “Tirs” (Shooting Paintings) involved firing a rifle at paint-filled assemblages, transforming destruction into creation.

She later gained international acclaim for her vibrant, monumental “Nanas”—celebratory, curvilinear female figures that challenged traditional representations of women and asserted joy, strength, and autonomy. Her ambitious environmental project, the Tarot Garden in Tuscany, remains one of the most remarkable large-scale sculpture parks of the 20th century.

Through humor, color, and fearless experimentation, Saint Phalle expanded the possibilities of sculpture while contributing significantly to feminist discourse in contemporary art.
