Artist Biography: Louise Bourgeois

(French/American, 1911–2010) was one of the most influential artists of the 20th and early 21st centuries, renowned for psychologically charged sculpture and installation. Born in Paris, she moved to New York in 1938, where she became associated with Surrealism and later postwar abstraction. Drawing deeply from personal memory, trauma, and family dynamics, Bourgeois created powerful works exploring sexuality, motherhood, vulnerability, and strength.

Her monumental spider sculptures, including Maman, became iconic symbols of both protection and resilience. Through series such as the Cells, she transformed autobiographical experience into immersive environments confronting fear and desire.

As a woman working in a male-dominated art world, Bourgeois helped redefine sculpture as a space for emotional and feminist inquiry. Her uncompromising vision paved the way for generations of women artists to foreground personal narrative as a legitimate and powerful artistic language
