Artist Biography: Magdalena Abakanowicz

(Polish, 1930–2017) was a groundbreaking sculptor who transformed fiber into monumental contemporary art. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, she rose to international prominence in the 1960s with her immersive woven forms known as Abakans, which blurred the line between tapestry and sculpture.

In the 1970s, she began creating haunting groups of headless, burlap figures that explore themes of anonymity, collective identity, and the trauma of war and authoritarianism. Representing Poland at the Venice Biennale in 1965, she achieved global acclaim, and her large-scale installation Agora (2006) remains permanently installed in Chicago’s Grant Park.
