A large whale’s tooth decorated with incised scrimshaw, one side depicting a sailing ship at sea with a whale surfacing amid waves, the obverse with a small whaling boat and men in pursuit. Warmly patinated surface.
length 5 1/2 inches
Provenance: Property from a Essex, Connecticut estate
Condition: Age cracks, wear, and scattered surface abrasions consistent with age and handling.
