Artist Biography: Margaret D. H. Keane

(American, 1927–2022) was a pioneering artist whose iconic “big-eyed” figures became a cultural phenomenon in the 1950s and 1960s. At a time when the art world was largely male-dominated, her career was shaped by both commercial success and personal struggle. For more than a decade, her husband, Walter Keane, falsely claimed authorship of her paintings. In 1970, Margaret publicly revealed the deception and later proved her authorship in a highly publicized courtroom “paint-off.”

Her haunting portraits of women and children, defined by oversized, expressive eyes, blend innocence with melancholy. Straddling fine art and popular culture, her work influenced advertising and contemporary figurative art. Keane’s fight for recognition remains a landmark moment in the history of women artists.
