Artist Biography: Jaune Quick-to-See Smith

(American, 1940–2025) was a groundbreaking Native American artist and curator whose work powerfully addressed Indigenous identity, history, and contemporary politics. Raised on the Flathead Reservation in Montana, she spent her youth traveling throughout the Pacific Northwest and California with her father, a horse trader. Determined to become an artist, she studied at Olympic College in Washington, completing her degree in 1976, and later attended the University of New Mexico, where she founded the Grey Canyon group of contemporary Native artists.

Working in painting, printmaking, and mixed media, Smith combined abstraction with text and imagery drawn from Native symbolism and American popular culture. Her work challenges stereotypes while asserting Indigenous presence and resilience. Her art is held in major museum collections including the National Gallery of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
