Artist Biography: Jane Peterson

(American, 1876–1965) was a prominent modernist painter whose expressive style bridged Impressionism and early Expressionism. Born in Elgin, Illinois, she studied at the Pratt Institute and later in Paris, where Fauvist and Post-Impressionist influences informed her bold color and energetic brushwork.

Peterson became known for her luminous harbor scenes, floral still lifes, and subjects drawn from extensive travels throughout Europe, North Africa, and Turkey. Her paintings capture fleeting light and atmosphere with confident, spontaneous execution. She exhibited widely at major American institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and worked alongside artists such as Childe Hassam and Joaquin Sorolla.

Her work is represented in leading museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
