Japanese Tosa School Six-Panel Folding Screen (Momoyama to Early Edo Period)
A six-panel folding screen (byōbu) painted in mineral pigments and ink with gold leaf grounds, depicting a continuous courtly narrative in the Tosa school tradition. The composition unfolds across roofless palace interiors (fukinuki yatai), terraces, and gardens, where elegantly robed aristocrats and attendants engage in ritual and social activity. Stylized gold clouds segment the scene, while architectural details and finely rendered costumes highlight the delicate linework and decorative refinement characteristic of the Tosa style. Such yamato-e compositions, often inspired by Heian-period literature and court life, reflect the school’s close ties to the Imperial court in Kyoto.
