“Nu Au Chat”, 1943
depicting a reclining female nude stretched across a patterned surface, accompanied by a small cat resting at her side. The figure is rendered in fluid, confident ink lines with selective washes of color accenting the robe, cushion, and facial features. The composition reflects Pan Yuliang’s synthesis of Western figural draftsmanship with Chinese ink traditions, and her pioneering exploration of the female nude as a subject of autonomy and introspection.
