Figure with wide eyes and open mouth in a cry of defiance, hair swept back beneath the Phrygian cap. The model is derived from François Rude’s monumental sculptural ensemble La Marseillaise (also known as The Departure of the Volunteers of 1792), completed in 1836 for the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and regarded as one of the masterpieces of French Romantic sculpture.
