Pair of American Federal Mahogany Armchairs
each with a curved crest rail and scrolling arms, upholstered back and seat with loose cushions, raised on turned legs ending in brass casters, warm mahogany finish. Reputedly formerly used in the Charleston, South Carolina City Council chambers and purchased by Mayor John Wagener circa 1870; Wagener, at the outset of the Civil War, commanded the First Artillery Regiment (largely composed of German immigrants) and was ordered to defend Port Royal Harbor, where his forces constructed Fort Walker on Hilton Head Island and held it until 1861; following the war he was commissioned brigadier general by Governor James Orr, and Fort Wagner on Morris Island was named in his honor; in 1871 he was elected mayor of Charleston and resided at the corner of St. Philip Street and McBride’s Lane.
