Oval devotional portrait of the Virgin Mother Mary in mourning, her eyes cast downward in quiet sorrow, wearing a white veil and grey robe; the black ground is encircled by a delicate Latin inscription in gold reading “Fili, quid fecisti nobis? Ecce, pater tuus et ego dolentes quaerebamus te” (Luke 2:48), translating to “Son, why have you done this to us? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in sorrow.”
