Large Carved and Polychrome Heraldic Shield of the Low Countries
Flemish or Dutch, 18th/19th Century
Carved wooden shield-form panel decorated in relief with polychrome heraldry. The central crowned arms with rampant lions is surrounded by numerous coats of arms representing the duchies and counties of the Low Countries, including Brabant, Luxemburg, and Anvers, with identifying inscriptions. Likely produced for civic or ceremonial display, in the tradition of heraldic panels made for guildhalls and municipal buildings.
