Carved and Polychrome Wooden Figure of the Madonna and Child, 12th Century
A carved and polychrome wooden figure of the enthroned Virgin and Child, executed in the Romanesque French style. The Virgin is shown seated frontally, crowned and draped in long robes, with the Christ Child positioned centrally upon her lap. The composition follows the rigid, iconic symmetry of 12th-century Marian sculpture. Traces of original and later polychromy are visible across the surface.
