Chippendale chest of four drawers flanked by quarter columns all set on ogee feet with carved spurs, probably Norwich CT. circa 1760-1780 paper label reads This bureau was Capt. Martin Beckswith’s wedding gift to his bride in 1808, Mrs. John O’Brien bought it at auction many years after, Sept 22 1914 A. Butler bought it from Mrs. O’Brien. Captain Martin Beckwith was born April 28, 1780. He married Tirza Judd of South Hadley, Massachusetts in 1808. Capt. Beckwith was the son of Jabez Beckwith from East Haddam, Connecticut. Jabez helped lay out the boundaries of the town of Lempster, New Hampshire. Captain Martin Beckwith assisted in the obsequies commemoratives of Washington’s funeral. He was a military guard at the Capital and he had the honor of shaking hands with Lafayette. He attended five sessions of the New Hampshire Legislature.
